#75 Sad Club Records - Label of the Month

This month we are bringing you a new segment where we shine a light on another independent label that we see doing great things. This month, we're introducing Sad Club Records ran by the very talented Tallulah Webb and home to the equally talented Blackaby and Clara Mann. We spoke to Tallulah and had a little Q&A to see where her inspiration comes from, what it takes to run a label and found out a couple of other fun facts too.. [Photo by Chiara Gambuto]

  • Hey Tallulah, when did the first idea of creating the label come about?

I started it when I was 18, I’d always looked up to labels like Sarah and Postcard and really wanted to kind of do what they were doing. It was a really gradual journey, starting small from the love of music and DIY labels and gradually growing into a proper label really

  • How would you describe the style and vision of your Label?

We’re pretty DIY - love a good collage and hand drawn image. I guess indie-pop has always been pretty DIY and hand-drawn etc so we’re following on that. I love the aesthetics of Sarah Records and bands like Talulah Gosh, with Sarah’s ‘Saropoly’ and all their amazing posters and all.

  • Where do you find hungry and ambitious artists?

I don’t really think the main thing we’re looking for in an artist is hunger and ambition, but more banging tracks and a great vision. It really depends where we find them though - most of our artists are London-based so the scene in London plays a massive part.

  • Who’s in your Team?

It’s just me - Tallulah. I'm really lucky to have a bunch of people around me that always help me out, and other labels who are incredibly supportive!

  • What is the release of which you are most proud of?

That’s impossible to say. I think with each release we grow and do something new with it, so I reckon each new one that we do! Really happy with how the Clara Mann release is doing!

  • What first got you into music?

Probably more of a ‘who’ and it would’ve been my older sister who loaded up my first iPod type device when I was about 8. She was always the one to show me new music and take me to gigs.

  • Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I’ve always really wanted John Myrtle to do a X-mas song with Mariah Carey but I guess Ariana Grande got there first. Think it could work really well.

  • If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?

I’d like it to be better for womxn in music.

  • What’s next for you?

We’ve got a lot planned for 2021 - gonna be a really big one for us. I don’t wanna give too much away before its announced but a lot more artists, way bigger campaigns and bigger formats.
