#64 Carmody - Lives Apart

‘South London’s Electronic Soul Queen’ - Carmody returns with her stunning new single Lives Apart. Acclaimed by Notion Magazine, this title has stuck and her captivating music has been championed by the likes of Zane Lowe, Guy Garvey and Jamie Cullum. Her writing has been prolific since her honest tone first blessed our ears in 2014 with Out To Sea - a collaborative EP of high calibre in partnership with Tom Misch. Since, Carmody has sold out shows at a number of South London’s venues including Omera, The Waiting Room and The Bussey Building, truly living up to her title.

Lives Apart is from a 6 track collection called My Jupiter whose motivation surrounds subjects of loss and bereavement. The culmination of ideas is so profound and meaningful, exploring omnipresent themes, by an artist who is consistently proving that she is one of the most intelligent and intuitive talents around. Lives Apart is the third release of the EP and utilises layered vocal lines and acoustic guitar to express its touching sentiment.

As Carmody explains, “I was really intrigued by how couples manage to stay in long-term relationships even as they evolve into different versions of who they were when they first fell in love”.  However, after the passing of her father last year, the track started to gain a new meaning:

“Originally it was a song about my relationship with my partner, seeing him in ‘another room’ and trying to feel out the new space between us and move with it. When I wrote the second verse I had recently lost my Dad, so it came to be about our relationship and the ‘other room’ as the afterlife. The chorus is about continuing the bond I have with both my partner and my dad but recognising the ‘new worlds’ that may appear around, or even between, us. There are so many undercurrents continually whirling beneath every relationship and sometimes it’s hard to acknowledge the changes that occur and catch them before people drift away from each other. This becomes particularly difficult when they have passed away, but I'm working on it...”

Carmody’s conscientious and fearless artistry sets her apart as a unique and important voice, exploring often under-represented aspects of the human condition with spellbinding and powerful effect. Her streaming record is confirmation of her beautiful and unique sound, having already accumulated over 70 million streams across Spotify and Apple Music. Lives Apart, much like her previous releases, is not one to be missed, so go check it out!
