#277 - Food And Drinks To Avoid Pre-Gig

Before a singing performance, it's important to avoid certain foods and drinks that can negatively affect your voice. Here are five to steer clear of:

  1. Dairy Products

Dairy products like milk, cheese, and yogurt can increase mucus production, which can lead to throat congestion and make it harder to sing clearly. Opt for non-dairy milk alternatives like almond or oat milk.

  2. Caffeinated Beverages

Coffee, tea, and sodas contain caffeine, which can dehydrate your vocal cords and lead to dryness, making it harder to sing smoothly. Drink herbal teas (without caffeine) or water with a slice of lemon.

  3. Alcohol

Alcohol dehydrates the body, including the vocal cords, which can lead to vocal strain and reduced control. Stick to water or a light herbal tea before your performance.

  4. Spicy Foods

Spicy foods can cause acid reflux or heartburn, which can irritate your throat and vocal cords, leading to discomfort while singing. Choose bland, non-acidic foods that are gentle on your stomach.

  5. Carbonated Drinks

Carbonated drinks like soda and sparkling water can cause bloating and gas, which can be uncomfortable when singing, as well as cause unwanted burping. Stick to still water or natural fruit juices without carbonation.
