#181 - How to Find Your Artist Narrative

  1. What/who inspired you to become a musician? Tracing who’s inspired you along the way is a useful strategy for introducing yourself to new fans. It’s not about saying you’re a carbon copy of these artists, but rather about having a handful of names to use as reference points to begin to paint the picture of your unique sound.

  2. When did you first become interested in making music? Chances are, you can probably remember the moment when it clicked, the moment when you decided that you wanted to direct your energy into creating your own music. It’s worth remembering this as it’s a key moment to weave into your artist narrative.

  3. How did you get to where you are now? Whether you’re on your fifth album, debut single, or you’re in the initial, explorative phase of songwriting, you’ll have an entirely unique reason as to why you’re at the point you’re at. Sharing your story until now with your followers is a great way to help your fans / future fans get to know you.

  4. What themes / topics continually inspire your music? It’s important to locate the thread that connects your music across singles and albums. Whether there’s a particular place, an experience (a loss, moving somewhere new, having kids, a break-up), or a feeling you always return to, share this with your followers - write it in your bios and include this thread in your general visual aesthetic.

  5. What do you struggle with / love most about making music? This will be a key facet of behind the scenes content - and, with TikTok becoming increasingly popular, there’s room for presenting these things in a fun, humorous way (if that feels right, of course). Even though being a musician is mostly a fulfilling, rewarding experience, followers will respect your honesty in revealing the frustrating points in the creative process.
