#166 M G Boulter - A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton

In this week’s artist blog feature, we’re delighted to introduce you to Essex-based artist, M G Boulter, and his brand new single, A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton. With his second full length album With Wolves the Lamb Will Lie listed as one of the ‘Best Folk Albums of 2016’ by the Daily Telegraph, alongside past releases garnering the attention of Uncut and the Independent on Sunday, M G Boulter is undoubtedly one to watch.

The first track to be released from a forthcoming EP, A Shadow Falls Over New Brighton is one out of a collection of tracks that retrace the history of Clifftown. Accompanied by soft guitar and Harriet Bradshaw on strings, Boulter’s voice drifts beautifully across this track, following the story of a “beach-comber” who feels lost and frustrated, and “makes enemies out of nothing”.

The remainder of the EP (out in June), continues Boulter’s project of retelling the town’s history by picking up a selection of characters along the way, such as Lady Arabella Stuart - whose attempted escape to France via Southend-on-Sea following an illegal marriage to William Seymour ends in tragedy. Boulter is skilled at reframing these stories in a way that feels set to chime with a contemporary audience, expertly embracing the narrative traditions of folk lyricism in a way that feels timeless yet fresh.
