#162 - 5 artists supporting sustainability

  1. Coldplay - Coldplay’s ongoing ‘Music Of The Spheres’ tour aims to produce the smallest amount of carbon possible. To achieve this, they’re using a combination of kinetic dancefloors and electric bikes to power the performance. Alongside this, they’re also increasing recycling efforts and funding nature and technology-based projects to offset unavoidable carbon produced by the tour.

  2. Lizzo - A proud advocate of veganism, Lizzo regularly shares delicious vegan recipes with her fans across her TikTok and Instagram - showing just how easy a sustainable diet can be. Alongside this, she doesn’t own a car and prefers to opt for electric and sustainable transport where possible.

  3. Radiohead -  In 2019, Radiohead’s official website was hacked and their unreleased music held for ransom. They responded to this by uploading all their unreleased music to Bandcamp and donating all the proceeds to environmental activist group, Extinction Rebellion.

  4. The 1975 - Alongside introducing a scheme allowing fans to re-print old merch with newer designs, The 1975 also collaborated with environmental activist, Greta Thunberg, on their latest album, ‘Notes On A Conditional Form’. The title track of the album features Thunberg giving a chilling monologue over atmospheric melodies - the song has been streamed more than 7 million times on Spotify alone.

  5. Darwin - Concerned with the number of flights she was taking as a touring DJ, Darwin founded an environmental initiative called Clean Scene back in 2019, which aims to create a more sustainable future for the dance music industry. The initiative's research includes a report examining the flight data of RA’s Top 1000 DJs, and they’re currently working on a carbon calculator, which will make it easy for artists to calculate (and, as a result, reduce or offset) their carbon footprint.
