#69 Carmody - My Jupiter
The sensational Carmody has finally released her extraordinary EP My Jupiter on Young Poet Records. Following the stunning teaser singles, Lives Apart and More Than I Miss You, released earlier this year, this EP is one we just couldn’t wait to hear. It showcases her honest and pure sound accompanied by the perfect acoustic mix. The EP is a highly personal body of work mapping Carmody’s experience of grieving, following the loss of her father last year.
“Although a couple of the songs were written before my dad died in October last year, the record still moves chronologically, from being told about his diagnosis in 'Stronger Than My Love', to trying to conceive the unimaginable in 'My Jupiter' and finally hoping for the transcendent in 'Rise'.” - Carmody
The inspiration for one of the tracks, Rise, arose from a conversation Carmody had with her Grandmother, following the loss of her Grandfather.
“She told me that in the Jewish tradition when a parent dies the children have to say the Kaddish prayer for a year everyday afterwards to help the body rise. I'm not religious, but I thought this was a beautiful image, the idea that a prayer from a loved one, a daily devotion, can lift the person up and help them leave the world. The prayer also seems to create a new connection to the person who has died, a new relationship that you develop with them daily, even though they have physically disappeared.”
My Jupiter also tackles the most ubiquitous of themes, especially in the current context of the global pandemic. During the initial stages of lockdown, Carmody wrote a piece for Adwoa Aboah’s ‘Gurl’s Talk’ discussing the process of grieving in a grieving world. You can read her beautiful words here.
