#68 Vicky Sometani - Maybe
If there were a single voice to get us through what seems to be a never-ending year it would be none other than the unique and soulful sound of Vicky Sometani. Her exceptional new single Maybe, will transport you on a journey to the hazy basement of Ronnie Scott’s, Soho in the 1950s. With a melodic tone vastly comparable to this era, Vicky’s honest and contemporary spin brings her music to the present day with her stripped back acoustic sound and current, inimitable voice. Maybe has already been picked up by the likes of Phoenix Magazine and is not one to be missed!
Vicky grew up in Chicago and resided in New York for a number of years before falling in love and moving to London. Holding a sentiment that is close to her heart, Maybe is the ultimate reflection of Vicky’s journey since arriving in London. Her unique vocals and powerful motifs replicate her story through struggles with self-destructive habits and the realisation of an undeniable need for change. Vicky’s acknowledgement of her own pain marks a transformative and defining moment which is embodied through her lyrics. This, alongside its groovy rhythm, bouncing vocals and timeless brass section creates an uplifting tone whilst maintaining a message that is undeniably important in today’s society – it’s ok to ask for help.
Her exceptional sound arose through musical influences from a vast concoction of times and genres; spanning from Feist, Etta James, Sufjan Stevens to Lauryn Hill and Julia Jacklin. As an experienced performer Vicky has played international shows for ‘Sofar Sounds’ in both London and New York. Her debut single Breeze was a huge success; released on Laid Bare Records in 2019 it featured on BBC Introducing, Soho Radio, and reached Number 4 in the iTunes singles charts. Maybe meets the same high calibre of music, integrating her distinctive vocals with a touching and personal sentiment – a unique and honest artistic creation.
