#47 Lila Tristram - Our Friends
Lila Tristram has begun to draw attention in the music industry with some impressive previews and appearances: a sold-out show at London’s award-winning live music venue The Green Note and surprising fans with an unexpected feature on BBC Sound’s November 2019 HotList.
Since her debut EP release in March, Lila has already received praise from some of Britain’s top radio presenters and industry professionals. She was described as “The female Bon Iver” by BBC producer Claire Slevin and has also received acclaim from 6Music’s Jon Hilcock, Amazing Radio’s Charlie Ashcroft and Rory Connolly, BBC Music editor.
Lila is now back with her haunting new single - Our Friends.
The music creates a sense of stark emptiness, laying the foundations for her hypnotic yet passionate vocal delivery. As the song develops, eerie synths fill the empty landscape like thick clouds, woven together with a static electricity panning from left to right, the desolation of heavy rainfall or the hope of a cheering crowd. Sonically, this song encompasses the haunting, timeless quality of early Marika Hackman, and the poetic nature of Aldous Harding, another of her major influences.
After recently speaking with Lila, she provided me with an insight into Our Friends:
“This song is about the pain of never truly being able to make other people happy. When you really think about it, it’s both kind of devastating and freeing at the same time.”
