#62 Our Man In The Field - The Company Of Strangers
Americana music via Saltburn-by-the-Sea? Sure. The Company of Strangers is the debut album from Our Man In The Field and a perfect introduction to an artist who has caught attention on the London folk-scene in recent years, and already gained the support of BBC introducing and Sofar Sounds in the UK.
Produced by Jim Wallis, Alexander takes inspiration from Alt-Americana and Caledonian Soul stylings of Van Morrison, Neil Young and Tom Petty. Think of Our Man In The Field as an independent correspondent, with his works dispatches from his travels.
“I used to think the songs were about other people and that allowed me to write quite freely. Maybe all songwriters think like that. I’m sure we all put plenty of ourselves in there as well. I believe people want something true, something authentic, I know I do, so try to write and sing as honestly as possible” – Our Man In The Field
The Company of Strangers perfectly accomplishes this feeling of authenticity which is emulated by its live recording at The Rattle in London’s Tobacco Dock. The use of acoustic instrumentation alongside Alexander’s pure vocals creates an honest sound that is both emotional and timeless.
“So here it is, a band in a room playing songs together. I hope people enjoy this record as much as we enjoyed making it.” – Our Man In The Field
