#40 WHOA - Birthh

Birthh (Alice Bisi), a 23-year-old singer-songwriter from Italy, recently released her bright and playful new album, WHOA. Differing from her darker, more heart-breaking first release, Born in the Woods, her latest album feels lighter, and more carefree. Energetic synths, unpredictable tempo changes and a mixture of genres - WHOA shows Birthh progressively experimenting with her music.

WHOA opens with a more indie-pop orientated track, Supermarkets, that perfectly establishes the atmosphere for the rest of the album. This leads into the punchier track, Yello / Concrete, which demonstrates Birthh experimenting with some sharp electric beats blended with Bob Dylan-esque guitar patterns. The beautifully hypnotising tracks Draw and audio 1 follow, giving the album a moment of tranquillity and reflection.

Hip hop inspired Ultraviolet again shows Birthh’s ability to move between different genres of music. The inclusion of Ivy Sole adds even more character to this enchanting album. The rest of the album continues to have some more stunning moments, like the extremely personal track, Parakeet, that touches on the loss of her Grandmother; “Just like my second mother”, “I hope you remember me”. Towards the end of the album, we see Birthh experimenting with electric infused styles on Human Stuff and Space Dog, alongside the more acoustic and delicate tracks reprise and Elephants Sing Backwards.

A beautiful mix of genres, perfectly demonstrating Birthh’s ability to create a diverse musical landscape.
